That’s a what? $2MM? $3MM car? I mean, cars should be driven, but I’d be afraid of it getting smashed or dented by some dickbag that texting or generally not paying attention....

Probably in the mid-upper 1s. Nice Rudge wheels.

These can be rebuilt from any condition, and it is obviously restored anyway, so no time capsule to preserve.  I am sure it is insured, so drive it!  It’s pretty impossible to total.

But do  you fill it with premium or regular unleaded fuel?

Cars are meant t o be driven and seeing this makes me happy.

That’s so perfect and immaculate I have to wonder if it’s an A grade replica. Like that would still make it worth many hundreds of thousands of dollars but at least not millions.

Old MBs have hardened valve seat s. PUG will be fine. I run it in my fintail without worry.

I’ve heard that 300SLs are some of the most frequently driven of old expensive collectors  cars.

Old Datsun's do not have hardened valve seats despite copying Mercedes over head cam engines.

The variation can be huge. @1- 1.75 . Given the cost new, what can get screwy is who owned them over the years.

The w194s that they wre based on were regarded as tanks in mille miglia and panamerica races, so I would assume the 300s woiuld carry that  ruggedness .

Unlike some cars (Cobras, Ferraris) when you see one of these and the proportions look right (they’re really low) , it’s probably real.

Mercedes has fought any replicas very hard, and the design has some unique characteristics that are very hard to make a kit car out of it without it looking silly.

I saw one of these parked at a regular old parking meter in Scottsdale a few years back.  Incredible to see one just being used as a car, not on some fancy show field.

Thanks, but we’ll be alright. We’ve been ridiculous fortunate these past 15 years, have saved well, and are debt free (and both still have our jobs, for now) . Sadly, there are many in the business who won’t fare as well in the next few years...

“ GasBuddy reports gas is pumped at 90 cents a gallon at a Sam’s Club in Moore; 95 cents a gallon at a Sam’s Club in Tulsa and 95 cents at the Okmulgee Country Corner.”

Anytime I see a car like this out and about, I like to think it’s the original (or maybe second) owner who’s just being driving it their whole life and taking great care of it all along, almost oblivious to how valuable the car has become.

Here’s one of my favorites:

“Eastbound and Down...”

BTW, I don’t know that my kids pay attention to much of anything dad says... but I try to remind them of how idiotic it is to take on loans to buy cars at any age, but most of all in your 20s when you should be building wealth. My oldest has developed a taste for older BMWs and just bought a sweet old E28 for a song. The others seem to be following suit, so maybe seeing me avoid the dealerships and the Car Payment Treadmill is rubbing off? Anybody that’s avoided debt hopefully can ride through this storm... because it’s about to get bumpy.

Good for your son! Hopefully that E28 serves him well.

It’s a tough balance between being a rabid car guy and a naturally frugal person. My parents definitely passed down the “Depression era mentality” that they inherited from their folks - my dad was born in ‘37 and was the youngest of 8 raised by a widow (my grandpa died from an infection before my dad was born - his older brothers had to grow up fast).

Took me until I was 34 and pretty well set financially to buy my first frivolous car (my M3) - and even then, it was a used family sedan. We’ll see how old I am before I spring for my first “true” sports car.
